About Modern Life?
Originally established in 1994 by then up and coming filmmakers Phil Hobden & Ross Boyask, Modern Life? (under different guises from For This Is Film and Underground Productions) is the UK’s leading fully independent genre production company. The past 14 years have seen us involved directly in over forty short films and numerous feature films, with peripheral involvement in many more.
Modern Life?'s remit has always been simple – to produce high quality commercially viable genre projects and that is exactly what they have been doing for the past 16 years.
Our work has been screened extensively on both satellite and terrestrial television in our home country (including BBC to Channel 4) and at festivals & film markets around the world, including Cannes, MIPTV and AFM.
From award winning short films like Boyz Gone Bad and Blue Eyes, cult hits like Pure Vengeance and Lone Wolf to our recent feature productions Left For Dead and Ten Dead Men, Modern Life? have reinvented the independent UK film and in turn have opened the flood gates to a string of similarly themed projects.
Our first feature film, the ground breaking cult hit Left For Dead, has been a massive commercial and critical success and in addition to receiving rave reviews both home and aboard on it’s US release it charted it as a top 10 best seller with leading import company Store4DVD. So far Left For Dead has been released in almost 12 territories, including key countries UK, USA & Canada.
Our second feature, Ten Dead Men, has been a massive success in both the United Kingdom (where it has shipped over 30,000 units and charted as high as 8th in the UK charts) and the US where the film continues to hold it's own against much bigger budged competition. Ten Dead Men can now be purchased in over fifteen countries including the UK, USA, Greece, Germany, Japan and France.
In 2007 Phil Hobden set up Pulp Movies with the goal to assist other independent filmmakers in securing releases for their films - specifically in the UK and US markets. So far Pulp Movies has secured DVD releases for the Stephanie Beacham starring Witches Hammer , UK action films The Silencer, Left for Dead & Infestation and most recently the much anticipated Cut, starring UK Model Danielle Lloyd and Gremlin's star Zack Galligan.
In 2009 Ross Boyask stepped down as director of Modern Life? to pursue his own projects, inclduing expanding into corporate video production as well as his own projects such as the Cecily Fay starring Red Sonja inspired Warrioress.
2010 will see Modern Life? enter production on their third independent feature film as well as developing higher budgeted mainstream projects such as The Vicious Circle. In addition Phil Hobden will continue to work alongside some of the industries greatest upcoming talents offering advice, mentoring and assisting in securing DVD releases through Modern Life? subsidiary Pulp Movies.
Alongside our associated companies Phil's Quick Capsule Review (Film review site), ML Corporate (providing corporate multimedia solutions), Raging Psycho Comics (print and multimedia, which in
2007 saw the release of our first print based comic Night Warrior: Flame & Fury), our continuing work with UK magazines such as Combat where Phil Hobden's Combat Film section is quickly beccming THE place outside the film press mainstream for action movie reviews & opinion, Modern Life?
will continue to be the last word in UK independent multimedia genre production and comment.
